In Jainism there are 24 spiritual leaders who have achieved liberation and perfection. They are called “Ford-leaders” or “Tirthankaras”. Mahavira is regarded as the last of the great Tirthankaras of this era. He was a contemporary of the Buddha, who is generally considered the founder of Jainism. Jain rituals centre around sacred images and mantras. Jinas are believed to reside in top level of heaven, above the realm of the Gods.
